Flawed enforcement of court decisions undermines the trust in State justice

Court decisions in several European countries are often enforced only partly or with long delay - or sometimes not at all. This is one of the most frequent problems identified by the European Court of Human Rights (the Strasbourg Court). Flawed execution of final court decisions must be seen as a refusal to accept the rule of law and is a serious human rights problem.

US State Department on human rights in Croatia

The US State Department on Wednesday released a report on human rights in the world in 2008, including a 13-page section on Croatia that cites problems with societal violence, discrimination against minorities, violence against women, judiciary problems, pressure on the media, and corruption.

Raise your hand against smacking!

The international campaign "Raise your hand against smacking”, organized by the Council of Europe, was launched in Zagreb on Sunday 15th of June. By June 2008, 18 of 47 Council of Europe member states have banned corporal punishment of children at home, at school, at care institutions or in places of detention by law. The new campaign aims to abolish corporal punishment of children in all member states.

Violence against women

In surveys from around the world, 10–69% of women report being physically assaulted by an intimate male partner at some point in their lives.

Child abuse

Some 57000 children were killed in 2000, with those aged 0–4 years at greatest risk. Many more are victims of non-fatal abuse and neglect. About 20% of women and 5–10% of men have suffered sexual abuse as children.
